A Little History Behind Coral Gables Venues

But first, there’s a few fun facts about Coral Gables that shine light on why venues here are so unique. When you’re searching for Coral Gables wedding venues or corporate event venues, you may notice that many of them have a sort of Mediterranean flair (like Douglas Entrance). Have you ever wondered why that is?

Coral Gables was one of the first cities to place focus on city planning during the City Beautiful Movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. This movement was designed to overhaul the current thinking of city planning with a greater focus on beautification and grandeur. So, the city planner and builder at the time, George Merrick, took this movement to heart. He cultivated a city plan that embraced the Mediterranean Revival style and in fact mandated that buildings be centered around this form of architecture. The vision Merrick shared was “a most extraordinary opportunity for the building of ‘Castles in Spain.’” He executed it so well, the Spanish king Alfonso XIII awarded Merrick with the Spanish civil honor of the Order of Isabella the Catholic for celebrating Spanish culture in Coral Gables.

That’s why you’ll find incredible Spanish-style and Italian Renaissance-style buildings all over this fair city. Neat, huh? Now, let’s explore Douglas Entrance!
